Crude Oil
Light sweet crude oil is the most sought-after version of crude oil as it contains a large fraction that is directly processed into gasoline, kerosene, and high-quality diesel. The New York Mercantile Exchange designates petroleum with less than 0.42% sulphur as "sweet" while petroleum containing higher levels of sulphur is called "sour" crude oil. Crude oil is the worlds most actively traded commodity.

New York Harbour RBOB or Reformulated gasoline Blend stock for Oxygen Blending, is the benchmark form of gasoline and the most actively traded gasoline contact. RBOB gasoline replaced unleaded gas (petrol) as the benchmark gasoline as it is produced without the harmful chemical MTBE contained within unleaded gas.

Also known as No. 2 Fuel Oil, Heating oil accounts for 25% of the output of a barrel of crude oil, the second largest component after gasoline. It is widly used as a means of home heating, particulary in areas with no access to natural gas. For this reason its price is greatly affected by changing weather.

Natural gas is the second highest volume futures contract in the world based on a physical commodity. Demand for natural gas is expected to continue to increase due to its environmental benefits when compared to coal or oil. The main producer of natural gas is the United States, with Russia a close second, while Iran and Qatar are also large producers.
